Avondale Utd 4 (O’Shea 47 pen, Walsh 49, 109, O’Sullivan 89) UCC 3 (Falvey 9, 15 Pender 85) (after extra time)
By Paul Connolly.
Avondale Utd won the battle of the champions at Turners Cross on Saturday afternoon as the MSL Premier League champions, UCC succumbed to the FAI Intermediate Cup champions, Avondale Utd.
A lightening start from UCC nearly saw them lead in the first minute, Daniel Pender’s curling effort
flashing past the post.
Avondale manufactured a few half chances but UCC stormed into a two goal lead after hesitancy in the
Avondale backline which resulted in Simon Falvey winning a header which he then chased down and slotted past Daniel O’Leary.
A second goal for UCC came after 15 minutes of play, again a mix up in the Dale defence and Falvey was there again to pounce as he toepoked past the on rushing keeper.
Falvey nearly completed his hat-trick as he got in one on one but O’Leary tipped his effort over for a corner kick.
A blistering start to the second half from Avondale had them scoring two goals in a minute.
They hauled themselves back into the game as Danny O’Connell was brought down for a penalty and Josh O’Shea converted and for the second, a great ball from Mark O’Sullivan found Jack Walsh’s head and he glanced home.
Avondale tails were up and they nearly took the lead when O’Connell saw his effort creep narrowly wide.
UCC gradually played there way back into the game and after a good one-two Eoin Collins had O’Leary
saving with his foot as his shot was heading for the corner.
With five minutes remaining, Collins turned a lovely ball into the path of Garan Manley who made his way down the left and he crossed for Daniel Pender to slot home to give the students a late lead.
However, there was a sting in the tail, a late free had Mark O’Sullivan get on the end of a low cross and he turned the ball in at the near post to send the game into extra time.
Extra time brought about several chances to win the game but it wasnt until the dying seconds the gave was won when after a scramble where Avondale hit the post twice, Jack Walsh was on hand to seal the win.
