O’Donnell: Cup Matches Are All On The Dayby Cork Sports News December 2, 2018
Ringmahon Rangers are in Dublin today to try and see off Newtown Rangers at the second attempt after last weekends 1-1 draw in Mahon.
It was a disappointing result for the MSL Premier Division pacesetters with home advantage but they will be hoping to do it the hard way today and Anthony O’Donnell believes they can overcome their Dublin opponents.
“We were very disappointed overall with the result last week in not finishing the game off in Cork.
“I feel if we had taken our chances in the first half we would have been out of sight and we know that we can play better but it’s all on the day in these cup matches.
“We are quite confident in our ability to go to Dublin and come through the tie.
“I think if we can get the ball forward a lot faster to the front men and with the support arriving from midfield we can hurt them.
“Their goal came via a free kick so we will be aware not to be giving away set pieces in dangerous areas of the pitch.
“The Premier league title and FAI Intermediate Cup are the two big competitions we want to do well in and we have spoken about this at the start of the season.
“It is always nice to think of a cup final in the Aviva Stadium but having played in the League of Ireland with Cobh Ramblers for a number of seasons, I don’t look beyond the next game.
“Cup football can be a mine field and we need to just focus on the 90 minutes up here and try and get ourselves into the next round,” said O’Donnell.
Anthony O’Donnell was speaking to Paul Hogan for Cork Sports News.
