It was the home team who won this cup fixture by a one goal margin thanks to goals from Nathan Broderick and Bradley Walsh with Peter Desmond scoring for the visitors.
The Kilcully based outfit started the better of the teams with Nathan Broderick having a great opportunity to open the scoring as early the 3rd minute but his shot went straight at the keeper.
St Mary’s did open the scoring in the 15th minute when Nathan Broderick slotted home with his effort going into the bottom corner of the net.
Ballinhassig restored parity and equalised on the half hour mark when Peter Desmond’s shot from the edge of the area went into the bottom corner of the net leaving Mary’s keeper Oisin Hennigan with no chance.
The game began to get scrappy in the last quarter of an hour with challenges flying in from all angles but they was no chances created so the sides went into the interval on level terms.
The latter half of this cup fixture was much the same as the opening half with no teams creating that much opportunities.
The hosts made a change with 12 minutes left when Bradley Walsh came on for Graham Hosford.
Walsh brought well needed fresh legs into a tiring Mary’s team and had a immediate effect as he scored the decisive goal to essentially put the tie to bed.
Ballinhassig had a lot of opportunities in the last couple of minutes to equalise but they just couldn’t finish their chances as St Mary’s now advance into the semi-finals of the Donie Forde Cup.
